Weil Announces Winner of 2020 First-Year Law Student Diversity Fellowship

International law firm Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP is pleased to announce that Ava Barzegar, a law student at University of Pennsylvania Law School; Lindsay Cooper, a law student at Duke University School of Law; Daphne Fong, a law student at New York University School of Law; Miriam Kontoh, a law student at Cornell Law School; Suzy Park, a law student at Columbia Law School; and Alesha Ignatius Brereton, a law student at Boston University School of Law are the winners of the Weil 1L Diversity $10,000 Fellowship awards for 2020. Ava, Lindsay, Daphne, Miriam and Suzy are Summer Associates in the New York Office. Alesha is a Summer Associate in the Boston Office.

The Weil 1L Diversity Fellowship Program, announced in October 2011, supports the Firm’s overall commitment to diversity and is designed to increase the number of diverse attorneys who want to pursue careers at one of its U.S. offices. The program was open to current students at ABA-accredited law schools who have successfully completed the first semester of their first year of a full-time J.D. program, with an expected graduation date of spring 2023, and who intend to practice law in a major city of the United States.

Ava Barzegar received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of Pennsylvania in 2019. She also received a Minor degree in French and Francophone Studies. During her time as an undergraduate, Ava was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa and received Honors Distinction in Political Science. She currently serves as a 1L Representative for Penn’s International Refugee Assistance Project, and is a member of the Penn Women’s Law Association. Ava most recently worked as a Senior Research Assistant for Dr. Daniel Q. Gillion at Penn.

Lindsay Cooper received a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Studies and Global Studies from the University of South Carolina in 2018. During her time as an undergraduate, Ava received Dean’s List honors all four years. She currently is a member of the Black Law Students Association, Women Law Students Association, and Woman of Color Collective. Lindsay most recently was an SEO Law Fellow at Wilmer Hale in Washington, D.C.

Daphne Fong received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business from the University of New York, Stern School of Business in 2016. During her time as an undergraduate, Daphne also worked 25-35 hours a week. She is currently a member of OUTLaw and If/When/How. Daphne most recently worked as a Strategy Associate at JPMorgan Chase & Co in New York.

Miriam Kontoh received a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies and Political Science from Rowan University in 2018. She also received a Minor degree in French and Law and Justice Studies. During her time as an undergraduate, Miriam received Dean’s list honors for all four years and The President’s Scholars of Excellence for maintaining a 4.0 GPA. She currently is a member of the Cornell Black Law Students Association. Miriam is also the Co-Founder of Literature for Little Ones, a local charitable organization.

Suzy Park received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Psychology from Cornell University in 2018. During her time as an undergraduate, Suzy was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa, Omicron Delta Epsilon (International Honor Society for Economics) and Psi Chi (International Honor Society in Psychology). She currently serves as a 1L Representative for the Asian Pacific American Law Students Association and the Columbia Business and Law Association. Suzy most recently worked as an Honors Thesis Researcher for the Social Perception & Intergroup Inequality Lab in Ithaca, New York.

Alesha Ignatius Brereton received a Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology from Texas A&M University in 2017. During her time at Texas A&M, Alesha received the Diversity Merit Fellowship. She currently is a member of Boston University School of Law’s Black Law Students Association, Business Law Society and Women’s Law Association. Alesha is also the Co-Founder of Collective Capacity Consulting, LLC.
