Weil Corporate Chairman Michael Aiello and Co-Managing Partner of the Boston Office Marilyn French have been named The American Lawyer 2015 “Dealmakers of the Year.” The American Lawyer honored 20 transactions overall from 2014, spotlighting what it describes as “creative thinking, novel approaches and innovative work.” Weil is one of only two firms to have more than one lawyer included on the list.
Mr. Aiello was highlighted for his role advising Kinder Morgan in its $76 billion acquisition of all the outstanding equity securities of Kinder Morgan Energy Partners, Kinder Morgan Management and El Paso Pipeline Partners, creating the third-largest energy company in the United States and the largest energy infrastructure company in North America. Mr. Aiello, who described the deal as the most complicated he has worked on, led the team in planning for expected litigation and also in orchestrating three different negotiations and four different shareholder votes, all of which had to be executed in sequence and closed on the same day. Ms. French was recognized for representing Advent International in its acquisition of start-up Noosa Yoghurt, a Colorado-based company offering 13 varieties of Australian-style yogurt. She worked out a longer-than-usual exclusivity period of four weeks, plus an extension that allowed her to successfully negotiate with key stakeholders to formalize the supply chain for the yogurt as well as negotiate a new license for the recipe, with an option to buy. Ms. French emphasized the importance of this element of the deal, saying: “The company is the yogurt…It is the recipe, and we didn’t own it.” Read Marilyn French’s full profile.
